All the fun of the farm…

Oh my. I haven’t been able to catch up with myself for the past week or two.

We have been losing ducklings to Respiratory Colibacilosis. Mum took the second one to get sick to the vets to get a diagnosis and he said it was very common with ducks and put it on Baytril 2.5% (0.1ml x twice a day). That bird didn’t make it, but the 3rd one to get sick seemed to turn round once on the drugs and it seems fine now. Apparently the disease has 100% mortality rate so that little thing is pretty lucky. Sadly we only have these 2 out of the original 6 left now.

We have also had a lot of fighting between their mum (Mrs Duck) and her older adopted brood of 3 females. Mrs Duck first got broody and sat on her nest for a month at the same time that her older daughters came into season so Mr Duck has had a lovely time playing with them. Now Mrs duck is back in the picture she is having to work hard to find her place at the top again.

The fighting has been horrible, but we have now decided to let them get on with it and find their own balance again.

Also our little (haha!) female turkey has been a little under par so they are all on Flubenvet in their feed to kill any worms she may have picked up from the chickens. Their run had turned to dirt as they eat anything green in sight so Jon has built them a huge run in the field where they look SO much happier.

Work for me has been crazy too (which with the current economic climate I am certainly not complaining about!) but it does mean that between that & the birds the housework & paperwork has been totally neglected and is now looming in a scary manner. Pah.

Wonder how much cleaners and book keepers cost…?
